Sweating – it’s something almost all of us deal with on a daily basis. A warm office, exercise, and those hot summer days are just sticky and uncomfortable. This is especially true for people who suffer from excessive armpit sweating, or axillary hyperhidrosis. The good news is that this condition can be treated…and with something that may surprise you – BOTOX.
Sweating is a normal reaction. It’s a way to cool your body down. However, some people experience abnormal sweating. Sufferers sweat more than others will in certain situations, and some will sweat for no reason at all. This is referred to as hyperhidrosis.
Types of Hyperhidrosis
There are two types of sweating:
- Localized Sweating
Localized sweating, or primary focal hyperhidrosis, affects up to 3% of individuals. This condition can start as early as childhood. This type of excessive sweating only happens in one area of the body – underarms, face, hands, etc. While it is not due to a disease or illness, and will not cause such, it can be quite uncomfortable, embarrassing, and dramatically affects people’s quality of life.
- Generalized Sweating
Generalized sweating is also called secondary general hyperhidrosis, and it affects the entire body. This condition is often caused by medical conditions such as menopause, thyroid problems, diabetes, tuberculosis, Parkinson’s disease, and others. A medical exam must be performed to understand the underlying cause of the sweating. Often times, treating the medical condition will reduce or eliminate excessive sweating episodes.
How BOTOX Can Help
Those suffering from localized sweating or generalized sweating caused by a stable health condition can seek help from BOTOX. This easy, temporary solution can be performed as many times as needed. The botulinum toxin is injected with an ultra-fine needle anywhere sweating is a problem. It blocks the release of the chemical that stimulates the sweat glands. The results last up to seven months.
Many patients have reported that BOTOX has worked wonders with stopping excessive sweating. They have had the injections done on their palms, underarms, on the neck and forehead. Some people have been able to benefit in two ways with these injections. By having them placed in the forehead, they have been able to stop sweating in that area and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Other people request to have the BOTOX placed under their arms, and since they are already in the chair, ask for the treatment on their face. This is normally not a problem.
