In a recent study conducted by researchers from London and Toronto, mice that had been injected with a type of botulinum toxin experienced significant pain relief. This experiment is bringing new hope for those who suffer from chronic, ongoing pain.

The Spinal Cord is the Key

The spinal cord is the “fiber optic cable” between the brain and the body. It is responsible for carrying sensation signals and other signals from the brain to the body and vice versa.

When pain occurs, the affected area of the body reports the pain signal to the spinal cord, which then carries the signal to the brain. Once the brain detects a pain signal, it sends out the sensation to the affected part of the body. This is how pain is produced.

This study utilized the concept of intercepting the pain signals before they ever reach the brain. Electronic stimulation devices are currently being implanted in people’s spinal cord region to effectively stop pain signals, which results in a better quality of life.

This study, however, used injections directly into the spinal cords of mice to try and mimic similar pain-relieving results.

Derm-BOT, a Combo of Botox and Dermophin

An opioid molecule called Dermophin was used in this experiment because it can be injected into the spinal cord without causing any addiction side effects or symptoms of being high.

What makes this experiment so unique is that the opioid was combined with a form of botulinum toxin, which is derived from the same toxin that is used to reduce facial wrinkles.

Derm-BOT brought immediate pain relief to the mice via an injection into the spinal cord. This medication works by blocking the pain signals in the spinal cord before they can reach the brain. Because this process is interrupted, the brain never receives a pain signal, and the mice felt experienced pain relief.

This study has shown the most promise for an injectable chronic pain solution thus far. Another previous animal study used an injectable medication in the spine, which worked effectively…but with serious side effects. The neurons responsible for carrying pain signals to the brain were permanently killed. Many researchers and physicians have valid concerns about killing neurons in the spinal cord that can never be regenerated.

It will be very interesting to see if this substance works in human study participants. If it does, it may be a safe and exciting solution for chronic pain sufferers. The injection lasts about 4 months before it needs to be repeated to maintain maximum pain relief.
