The Vampire Facelift gets its creepy name from the fact that real blood is used to make one of the ingredients for this procedure. There are several other steps involved in completing the process, so read on to learn everything A to Z about this effective cosmetic treatment.
Using Your Own Blood
As a certified provider of the Vampire Facelift, I have received special training and am certified to perform this procedure using the steps outlined by its inventor, Charles Runels, MD. Your own blood is used because it does not contain anything that will cause an allergic reaction (as other procedures can such as a chemical peel).
A few ounces of blood will be drawn from your arm to harvest what I like to call “liquid gold,” or your blood plasma (also called PRP). The plasma is a golden color and contains proteins, clotting factors, and growth factors.
Inside my office, the blood is spun in a centrifuge machine to separate the red blood cells and other blood products from the plasma.
Once the plasma is drawn up into a syringe, the procedure can begin.
Combining Microneedling with PRP
In order to make this procedure more comfortable, anesthetic cream is applied topically to the face to numb the skin. Once several minutes have passed, a microneedling device will be passed along the surface of your skin to produce thousands of microscopically small punctures in the skin.
Dermapen is the device that we use here in the office. It has been around for many years, and has an established record for safety and efficacy in cosmetic procedures. Once your skin’s surface has undergone microneedling, the blood plasma can penetrate the surface of the skin and seep into the deeper layers where collagen is formed.
Using Fillers with Vampire Facelift
In some cases, I will inject PRP into areas of the face where I can see that the underlying skin may need some “building up” of collagen. This procedure was designed to also incorporate hyaluronic acid fillers to produce the most effective results.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural sugar found in the skin that helps to draw in and bind moisture to the surrounding molecules in the skin. It helps the skin to look supple and youthful.
As we age, HA diminishes in the skin, causing wrinkling and dehydrated looking skin. In the Vampire Facelift, I inject HA fillers into areas where wrinkles and deep creases have formed so that the client’s overall look is refreshed and more youthful.
It takes about 6 weeks to start to see a change, with full results visible in about 2 to 3 months. The reason why it takes several months is because the skin needs time to produce more collagen after the procedure.
