Sometimes the greatest discoveries are made by sheer coincidence. Such is the case for the latest discovery of a new type of botulinum toxin protein. Botulinum toxin type A has long been used in medicine and aesthetics for its ability to paralyze muscles temporarily. Its uses include:

  • Migraine relief
  • Stopping excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Leaky bladder syndrome
  • Some cardiac issues
  • Reduction of facial wrinkles

This toxin is normally found in dirt and natural water sources, originating from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. In this latest discovery, a new source of the toxin was found in cow feces being examined in a laboratory.

The bacteria Enterococcus faecium was being studied for the purpose of potentially developing new medicine for antibiotic-resistant superbugs. To the researchers’ surprise, when they sequenced the bacteria’s DNA, they found the gene for botulinum toxin type A.

This is a significant discovery because it is the first evidence that the C. botulinum bacteria in the environment transferred to another bacteria (E. faecium) inside of an animal. Potentially, science now has a new source of this toxin, which may hold promise for even broader medical applications than what we have access to today.

How Does Botox Work?

The onabotulinum toxin A prevents the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine from being released so that nerve impulses never reach the muscles. This causes treated facial muscles to remain in a relaxed (paralyzed) state. Since muscles on the face can cause wrinkles to form as facial expressions are made, it is advantageous to paralyze certain muscles to avoid the formation of wrinkles.
