Researchers have recognized the benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic far exceeds what is already known about it. When most of us think of this injection, we think about it as a wrinkle releaser, help for hyperhidrosis, or a solution for migraines. In addition to these benefits, people may soon be able to see it as a way to boost the happiness.

BOTOX May Support Emotional Health

Studies are currently being conducted seeking to support the effects of BOTOX on emotional health. The neurotoxin is currently being used off-label for mild depression, but in time, researchers hope to seek the FDA’s approval as a potential treatment for the mood disorder.

The Journal of Psychiatric Research published an article in the June 2016 issue that explains emotional proprioception. When onabotulinumtoxinA is injected into the “elevens”, which are between the eyebrows, it blocks the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is what tells the brain that we are sad. If that nerve isn’t triggered, it won’t signal the brain to be unhappy. This is what can help people stay positive and content.

“It would appear that the way we feel emotions isn’t just restricted to our brain – there are parts of our bodies that help and reinforce the feelings we’re having,” according to Michael Lewis, the co-author of the study that found participants who received the injection were happier than those who did not.

In addition to the injection’s effect on the trigeminal nerve, reduction of wrinkles on the face can also boost people’s moods. When people see they look younger once again, they feel better about themselves. This can also elicit feelings of happiness.

It’s Not for Everyone

Currently, onabotulinumtoxinA is not approved for use on people with depression or mood disorders. Those who are depressed should seek help from a mental health professional.

In time, this potential treatment may help people with mild depression, but as of now, it’s just one of the potential benefits that comes with having a more youthful appearance.
