A double chin is caused by genetics, age, and excess weight. Before you turn away from this blog post thinking they are all beyond your control, I challenge you to keep reading. While these causes can be out of your control, there may be a solution to your double chin.

My name is James Christian Sardelli, RPA-C. My focus is on cosmetic injectables to help enhance the natural beauty of my clients in Long Island and NYC.

Genetics

People can have a double chin even if they are slim. Just like you can inherit the color of your eyes and hair, you can also inherit a double chin. Think about your family members. How many of them have a double chin? It’s likely you’ll realize that there are a few.

Genetics affect your entire being, including fat storage and water retention. These two factors also influence the amount of fat found under your chin.

Excess Weight

Fat can lead to a double chin. As you gain excess weight, it has to find a place to go. Genetics plays a role in where fat gets stored, yes, but even if you don’t inherit that fat storage location, it can still find its way there.

Lifestyle changes such as eating healthier and exercising can reduce the size of a double chin in some people.

Age

As we age, our skin becomes loose and we lose muscle mass. Both of these aging effects can lead to a double chin. This type of chin may appear different from one that would occur at a younger age, but it may now be called a “turkey neck.”

What You Can Do About a Double Chin

You can’t pick your genes, and you can’t stop the aging process. You can eat healthier and you can exercise. However, that’s not always the answer to getting rid of a double chin for some people.

Sometimes, losing weight means fat loss in every other part of their body except for the chin. When this happens, Kybella can be a viable option.

Kybella is a FDA-approved substance that dissolves fat. The substance is called deoxychollic acid that destroys fat cells.

This fat-melting injectable is administered directly beneath the chin. It takes up to 6 treatments with each one being at least one month apart. Some individuals receive a topical medicine or an ice pack to reduce the mild pain from the injections.

Results appear sometime between the second to fourth treatments with full results seen around the sixth session. The number of treatments needed depends on the individual.
