Every day, our face experiences the world around us in full force. It’s at the mercy of the harshest effects of weather, sun exposure, and many of the lifestyle choices we make. It’s no wonder our skin shows wear and tear as we age!

Our lifestyle, diet, habits, and genetics all play a role in how our skin ages. Free radicals are produced whenever the skin is exposed to harmful factors such as the sun, extreme temperatures, and unhealthy foods. These free radicals cause damage to our cells, which can lead to a loss of volume, loose skin, and wrinkles.

Fibers in the skin, called elastin, allow the skin to stretch and snap back when we are young. As we get older, elastin breaks down and can no longer snap back like it used to.

Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays has a lot to do with how much skin stretches and sags as we age, but so does gravity. Gravity’s pull on the skin bears down on many areas of the face, such as the eyebrows and eyelids. It also causes sagging in the cheeks and jaws, causing jowls and a double chin.

Lines on the forehead, around the mouth, and upper cheeks are typical as we age, especially after the age of 30. These are often the first signs that the skin is losing elasticity. This is usually when some people begin to wonder if it’s time to start getting BOTOX®.

How BOTOX Helps

BOTOX is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is FDA-approved for treating muscular conditions and it cosmetically removes wrinkles by paralyzing facial muscles. Once certain facial muscles can no longer move, the wrinkles on the surface (the facial skin) are smoothed away.

BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic procedure. The effects are temporary; most people need to have touch-up injections within 3-6 months. The good news is that when wrinkles return, they are usually less severe than they were before the treatment.
