As much as we all would love to splash some water on our face and move on with the day, that’s not the best way to preserve the health of our skin. It needs care just like any other part of our body.
The following tips on how to take better care of your skin will help your skin look and feel its best well into your Golden Years.
Drink Water
I can’t stress this enough: It’s important to hydrate your skin from the inside out! When you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, even more on hot days and when you exercise, you give your body what it needs to maintain the skin’s soft and supple texture.
Don’t like the taste of water? Add cut up fruit (“spa water”) or buy stevia sweetened liquid flavoring to improve the taste. Just stay away from additives with sugar and artificial sweeteners, which can increase cravings for sweets.
Use Moisturizer
Just because you drink a lot of water doesn’t mean you don’t need a moisturizer. Moisturizing lotion acts as a barrier for your skin; the wind and cold weather can cause your skin to dry out. Moisturizer maintains the skin’s moisture balance so thatyour skin stays exactly how it’s supposed to – moist.
Apply Sunscreen
Moisturizer by itself (unless mixed with sunscreen) will not block the sun’s harmful rays. Be sure to apply sunscreen every couple of hours when you’re outside. Without it, you could end up with age-related skin damage such as wrinkles, sun spots, etc.
Eat a Well-Balanced Diet
Your skin needs vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. The best way to nourish your body is through eating healthy foods. Be sure to eat vegetables, fruits, and protein throughout the day to give your skin the constant supply of nutrients it needs to look its very best.
Exercise
When you exercise, blood rushes to your skin in response to the physical demand. Additionally, sweating provides the pores with a way of cleansing from the inside out. So, don’t be embarrassed by your beet red face after a good workout! It’s actually a great sign that you’re doing exactly what you need to do for clearer, more beautiful skin.
What to Do for Past Damage
When we were younger, it was easy to not to care as much about our skin. We looked great and we took advantage of it. As we age, however,we start to see differences rise to the surface. We may even wish we had prevented the sun spots and wrinkles that came along with sun exposure, lack of hydration, and an unhealthy lifestyle.
