Your knees have become creaky. You huff and puff climbing the stairs. How could this have happened? Facing the changes as we age is a challenge. We want to stay healthy and active. Here are some tips that will help you to make your senior years some of the best of your life.

Aging is a worry for many people but can be slowed down by remaining healthy. Daily exercise and a healthy diet can reduce getting older effects, especially by drinking water. Getting plenty of sleep and taking care of your skin is another way to make sure you reduce wrinkles. Everyone ages, but that doesn’t mean you can’t age well!

Here’s a quick way to slow down the getting older process; quit smoking. If you are a smoker you’ve heard it all your life, but it’s just as true now. Smoking is a huge contributor to how old your skin looks. Plus it also reduces your life span as well. It is never too late to quit, so talk with your doctor about steps to take to put out the butts for good.

If you worry about growing older skin and wrinkles, stay away from the sun! Of course, we all like a little sun, but too much exposure can cause premature getting older of the skin as well as increasing the risk of skin cancer. Tanning beds also pose the same risks, maybe even to a greater extent, as people tend to overuse them.

Be sure to protect your skin from the sun. Getting a bit of sun each day can be very beneficial but be sure to wear sunscreen while you do it. Overexposure can lead to wrinkles and even skin cancer. Taking care of your skin is vital to living a long and healthy youthful life.

Be careful with your heart. Cardiovascular disease is the number one problem in society, so be aware of the organ in the center of your chest so that it keeps you well. Eat a proper diet, get enough exercise, and make sure your doctor runs tests on your heart to make sure that it’s working as it should.

A good way to reduce the impact of lines around the eyes is to wear sunglasses. Not only does this prevent squinting and causing crow’s feet, but sunglasses block the sun from hitting those high wrinkle areas and damaging the skin. So wearing sunglasses has a dual effect on the anti-growing older process.

Add some shiitake, maitake, morel or reishi mushrooms in your diet, it will help lower cholesterol, impart an energy boost, help prevent high blood pressure and provide immune system overall protection. It’s one of the proven and well-received Chinese methods which can be deemed either preventative or pro-active. You can even take them in supplement form if mushrooms are too much for you.

Focus on the things you can do and the things you like to do. Getting older can be frustrating because you begin to be unable to do the things that you once did. That can’t be changed, but your attitude can. Keep your focus on the things you are still able to do and then do them!

As you get older, fortify your diet with more healthy foods like fish, vegetables and fruits. As you age, your body becomes more sensitive to artificial ingredients that are found in processed foods. Keeping your diet full of healthier alternatives will save your body from the adverse effects of artificial fillers.

Know the signs of depression. As you get older, you may experience changes that leave you feeling down. If your feelings of sadness don’t go away, it might be depression. Talk to a doctor if you have persistent feelings of hopelessness and especially if you think about suicide or death.

Keep your creativity alive in your mature years. If you have retired, make good use of your extra time to pursue new interests, like art, photography and music. Taking classes can make your days more interesting and fulfilling. In addition, you will meet a lot of new and interesting people!

Remember, you are only as old as you feel. If you try to remain active and continue doing those things you enjoyed when you were younger, you will actually remain healthier and more fit than if you sit around. Don’t act like a teenager, but do continue to participate in volunteer activities and sports that you enjoy.

If you have healthy friendships, you will be more energetic and happy. You are never too old to enjoy the pleasure of making new friends. Get out in the world and make new friends. Love and friendship are the best ways to improve the quality of your life.

Pre-plan for the time when you are going to need senior services. This may be planning for your retirement home, nursing home, or home health care. If you take the time to plan it while you are able to, you are sure to end up in the place that you want to and that will bring you peace.

These tips give you a place to start. Now it is up to you to apply them. Choose the ones that suit you best and follow through with the exercise and care that will keep you healthy. Explore things you have always been interested in but didn’t have time to master. Your later years give you the great gift of time.
