Sweating is something we all do. It’s our body’s way of cooling down. Some more so than others, and in various areas of the body. That can include under your armpits, hands, feet, forehead, under your breasts and other areas – it’s something almost all of us deal with on a daily basis. If you have noticed excessive sweating through-out the day though, even during those times you are relaxed, you could have some level of axillary hyperhidrosis. While it is not due to a disease or illness, and will not cause such, it can be quite uncomfortable, embarrassing, and dramatically affects people’s quality of life. Now you have the ability to control and treat your excessive sweating with BOTOX®.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is referred to as a medical condition that causes excessive sweating. The word “hyperhidrosis” means too much (hyper) sweating (hidrosis). Excessive sweating happens when a person sweats more than is necessary. People who have hyperhidrosis, however, sweat when the body does not need cooling.

Hyperhidrosis can be broken into 2 types of excessive sweating.

Localized Sweating (Primary Hyperhidrosis)

Localized sweating, or primary focal hyperhidrosis, only happens in one area of the body – underarms, face, hands, forehead etc.

Generalized Sweating (Secondary Hyperhidrosis)

General hyperhidrosis, otherwise referred to as generalized sweating, or secondary hyperhidrosis, affects the entire body. Medical conditions such as diabetes, menopause, thyroid problems, obesity and other diseases can cause generalized sweating.
Both types of hyperhidrosis can be uncomfortable and cause people to feel extremely anxious and embarrassed. If you find yourself wearing multiple layers of clothes to hide your sweating, avoiding social gatherings and other situations which causes your sweating to get worse, our treatment options will help improve your quality of life.
A medical exam must be performed to understand the underlying cause of the sweating. Most often, treating the medical condition will reduce or eliminate excessive sweating episodes.

How Does BOTOX Injections Treat Excessive Sweating?

BOTOX® injections for excessive sweating is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment option that works to impair the sweat glands. Since BOTOX® is a neuromodulator, it directly affects how nerve signals interact with your muscles. When administered, these nerve signals are prevented from reaching sweat glands, in return preventing sweating. It is most commonly used underarms, but other treatment areas, such as the feet, hands, forehead or other areas may be discussed during your consultation.

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you suffer from localized sweating or generalized sweating, with a stable health condition, you can seek help from BOTOX®. Botulinum toxin is injected with an ultra-fine needle anywhere sweating is a problem. It blocks the release of the chemical that stimulates the sweat glands. This simple procedure can be performed as many times as needed, however we find most patients only need 2-3 treatments per year to keep their sweating under control.

How Long Does It Take To Administer?

BOTOX® injections for excessive sweating are administered by our team in the comfort of one of our offices. Typically treatment sessions take only a few minutes, and there is usually little to no pain associated with the treatment experience. You may however experience some minor bruising or swelling around the injection site.

How Long Do The Injections Last?

Almost everyone we treat has total or near-total elimination of their sweating – this typically takes about 10 days to completely work, however every patient is different. On average, two to three sessions are required per year. The results typically last up to seven months.

How Much Does It Cost?

Depending on the areas to be treated and severity of sweating, our costs can vary. We would love to sit down with you for a consultation, at which time we can recommend the best approach for your specific needs.
