BOTOX® and Dysport® are both neurotoxins, which block facial muscles from being able to contract. But are these two products the same? The short answer is no. While they both contain the protein Botulinum Toxin A, they work differently to deliver unique results.

Read on to learn more about these differences.

How BOTOX Works

This neurotoxin treatment is injected into muscles using a needle. Once in the muscle, it can no longer contract. This prevents the muscle from producing wrinkles on the skin.

The FDA has approved this muscle relaxer for use on moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) as well as around outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet). It is also effective on laugh lines and forehead wrinkles.

BOTOX lasts about 3-6 months before new injections are needed.

How Dysport Works

Dysport is made up of the same neurotoxin protein, but there are less of them in the formula. This can lead to the effects spreading to areas outside of the injection sites. And due to the difference in protein quantities, this injectable may be more effective on some people.

The FDA has approved Dysport for the treatment of “elevens,” which are the wrinkles that appear in between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).

The effects of this injectable take effect sooner than with BOTOX, as reported by some people, and it lasts 3-4 months.

Overview of the Differences

To understand the true difference between these two products, consider the following:

  • They are both effective in treating wrinkles, but Dysport is best for people who are more concerned about wrinkles in between their eyebrows and on the forehead.
  • BOTOX can treat a wider variety of wrinkles, such crow’s feet and laugh lines.
  • BOTOX lasts up to 6 months whereas Dysport lasts for 3-4 months.
  • You might see faster results with Dysport.
  • Dysport may be more effective on some people due to the amount of protein in the formula.

The differences are small, but noticeable for some people. The only real way to know which one will be best for you is to consult with an experienced injector.
