The 4 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Their Skin

As an aesthetics injector, I work on my clients’ skin every day. I can see the damage that has occurred over the years, and there are four mistakes that I see again and again.

I’d like to share these mistakes with you so that you can hopefully save yourself the trouble of making them.

Mistake #1: Not Wearing Sunscreen

You knew I was going to bring this one up. It’s not about just wearing sunscreen during the winter. You really need to wear it all year round – even when the sky is cloudy. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can still damage your skin even when you can’t see the sun.

Especially for those of us in areas where it snows, the sun reflects off the snow and can intensify sun damage to the skin.

Sun spots, fine lines, and wrinkles are just a few of the signs of sun damage. Of course, there are products and aesthetic treatments that can help lessen these signs, but sunscreen is your best preventive measure.

Mistake #2: Not Moisturizing Enough

Moisturizer is something every person needs. Again, just like sunscreen, it should be used year-round.

The winter months are when most people start to use moisturizer. The dryness of the season can make skin feel tight and start to flake. Face lotion soothes these issues and gives skin suppleness, elasticity, and replenishes moisture.

Unfortunately, many people slow down on applying moisturizer during the warmer months because they don’t think their skin needs it. This is especially true in the summer when sweat can make it seem like skin is well moisturized. Unfortunately, sweat can actually dry out your face even more.

I can tell when my clients don’t use moisturizer because their skin will have fine lines and dry patches. Their skin may have other issues such as redness or a rough texture.

The lesson here is to apply moisturizer daily no matter what time of year it is.

Mistake #3: Smoking

This may not be directly related to skin, but smoking has significant effects on it. Cigarettes and vaping leads to what is known as “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. These vertical wrinkles around the mouth come from pursing the lips when drawing on a cigarette. Another negative effect of smoking is that collagen and elastin become damaged, leading to premature aging of the skin.

Smoking is a tough one because most people start smoking when skin is the last thing on their mind. Most smokers start young, and premature aging isn’t really a concern. Of course, the longer a person smokes, the more signs of damage they see.

Wrinkles can be smoothed away with facial fillers like Volbella® and Restylane Silk®.  Most of my clients are satisfied with their results because it helps them to reduce creases, wrinkles, and folds.

Mistake #4: Using Too Many Products

You want the best for your skin. You buy the best skincare products on the market. Every morning, you put each one all over your face, and at night you wash your face and repeat the process.

This sounds like a good beauty regimen, right? It means you care about your face. The problem is that you’re caring a bit too much.

The products you’re using are likely full of chemicals. These chemicals are good to some degree. When overused, however, they can cause more harm than good.

It’s best to stick with a simple regimen. Wash your face, apply a toner to remove any dirt left behind, apply any serums (such as vitamin C), and then moisturize. You can do this in the morning and again at night. That’s it.

If you use anti-aging retinoid products, use them at night because they will make your skin more susceptible to sun damage (another great reason to use sunscreen during the day).

There are more things that can be a mistake for your skin and overall health too such as eating the worst foods during the holidays.
